News - Boy found guilty of murdering Yajay Sudra in Erdington

A 16-year-old boy has been found guilty of murdering a man in Birmingham as he walked home from work.

Lamah Prince, 16, Was found guilty of stabbing shop worker Yajay Sudra near his home on 9 July.

The court heard Prince had probably attacked the 21-year-old in an attempt to rob him.

Birmingham Crown Court was told he had shown "exceptional interest" in coverage of the death and had confessed he was the killer to a girl he knew.

'Would not answer'

He was convicted by an 11-1 majority verdict on Friday.

Mr Sudra, who worked in WH Smith at Birmingham Airport, had been carrying a bag when he was stabbed through the heart, close to his home in Marsh Lane, Erdington.

He made it to his front door and died in his mother's arms.

Speaking after the trial, Det Insp Paul Joyce, of West Midlands Police, said: "The offender refused to co-operate at any stage of the investigation, and would not answer any questions, but that did not stop us ensuring that he was brought to justice.

"Incidents such as this one are extremely rare, but when they do happen our officers will work hard to catch and convict those responsible.

'Justice for Jay'

"The response that we had from the local community and the wider public has been really positive throughout the investigation, and I would like to thank everyone for their efforts that have helped us to reach this conclusion."

Mr Sudra's sister, Sonya Sudra Abbotts, said: "We couldn't have got a better result today.

"It's not going to bring our Jay back but we can move on with our lives knowing that we have got justice for Jay, which is what we wanted."

Prince was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on 17 June.
